How to Write a Meaningful Apology That Repairs Trust

Yesterday I used this photo to introduce a story.

Today I’m using the same image for a different story.

I wanted to tell you about a Food Styling Book Project I had been asked to help with, and at first I didn’t recognize a serious problem: the organizers were asking photographers to submit their work for the book without offering fair compensation. My role would have been limited to a small honorarium to cover the time I put into coordinating the project. I was surprised at my own oversight — I should have seen it sooner. Several of you reached out and helped me see the issue more clearly, and I’m grateful for that.

I made a mistake, and I want to apologize.

This experience reminded me to trust my instincts. I had doubts but ignored them, and that led to a poor decision because I failed to see the bigger picture.

Given this, I decided to withdraw from the project.

I hope my choice did not cause too much disappointment. Thank you for your understanding and for those who brought attention to the matter.
