- Wire cutter
- A chain or cord for wearing the pendant
How to Make a Butterfly Pendant
STEP 1:
Begin with a length of wire long enough to form four wings and leave some tail for finishing. Find the midpoint, then bend the wire to form a small center loop—the butterfly’s body.

STEP 2:
Right next to the center loop, create a second loop of the same size. These two adjacent loops form the lower wings. Keep both loops even so the pendant will hang straight.

STEP 3:
Measure roughly 3/4 inch from the lower wing loops and bend the wire upward at that point. Shape this section into a small, leaf-like curve to form the outer edge of the lower wings, then bend the wire upward in preparation for the upper wings.

STEP 4:
Repeat the same shaping on the opposite side so both lower wings mirror each other. Take your time to match size and curve on each side for a balanced look.

STEP 5:
To form the upper wings, bend the wire at a point slightly farther from the center than you did for the lower wings. This creates proportionally larger upper wings typical of a butterfly silhouette.

STEP 6:
Shape the wire into leaf-like curves for the upper wings. Thread the wire carefully through or around the lower wing shapes where needed so the wings interlock and the structure remains secure. Make gentle adjustments so the wings sit neatly together.

STEP 7:
Repeat the upper wing shaping on the other side, matching size and curvature to the first upper wing. Check symmetry by holding the pendant at the center and making any small tweaks until both sides align.

STEP 8:
Bring the remaining wire ends to the center and twist them neatly to secure the wings. Trim any excess wire with your wire cutter, leaving enough length to form a small finishing loop. Use round-nose pliers to create that loop so you can attach a jump ring or a chain. Tuck or file any sharp ends so the pendant is comfortable to wear.

Once finished, slide the pendant onto a chain or cord and adjust the wings for a final polish. This simple wire butterfly makes a lovely everyday accessory and a great introduction to wirework jewelry.
