My brother is visiting from Germany and staying with us for a few weeks. Having him here has been so nice — we’ve been sharing favorite spots around the DMV, but the best moments are the simple ones at home: laughing on the couch, teasing each other in the kitchen, and lingering at the table.

With another hungry person in the house I’ve reverted to hearty meal prep — casseroles, sheet pan dinners, and stews that feed people for several days. One of our recent favorites was this Apple Cherry Tahini Crumble. It’s naturally sweetened with apple cherry butter and topped with a crunchy tahini, oat, and almond crumble. It’s simple to make and perfect for a summer breakfast or a light dessert.

What You Need to Make the Apple Cherry Filling

For the filling you only need a few ingredients:

  • Apples (3–4 medium to large, cored and chopped; peel if you prefer)
  • Cherries (about 2 cups, pitted and sliced)
  • Fresh lemon juice (1 tablespoon)
  • Pure maple syrup (1 tablespoon)
  • Eden Foods Organic Apple Cherry Butter Spread (about 1 cup)

How to Make the Apple Cherry Filling

Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch (or similar) baking dish with a little coconut oil. In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples, pitted and sliced cherries, lemon juice, maple syrup, and the apple cherry butter. Toss until the fruit is sticky and evenly coated. You can leave apple skins on or peel them — both work well.

Eden Foods Apple Cherry Butter

Eden Foods Apple Cherry Butter adds a saucy balance of sweet and tart to the filling. It blends Montmorency tart cherries with Michigan apples for a bright, fruity flavor. These fruit spreads contain no added sugar and are naturally sweetened with fruit and fruit juice, making them a great option for baking, topping oats, or spreading on toast.

What You Need to Make the Tahini Crumble

For the crumble topping you’ll need:

  • 1 cup gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 1/2 cup roasted sesame tahini
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup

Eden Foods Roasted Sesame Tahini

Tahini acts as a binder in the topping without adding extra oil. Roasted sesame tahini, made from hulled, dry-roasted sesame seeds, gives a subtle, slightly bitter note that offsets the fruit’s sweetness. It’s naturally vegan and gluten-free and works beautifully in both dressings and baked goods like this crumble.

In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, almond flour, maple syrup, and tahini. Mix until the oats and almond flour are evenly coated and the mixture forms small, crumbly pieces. The texture should be chunky and “crumble-like.”

Putting It Together

Spread the fruit mixture in an even layer across the bottom of your prepared baking dish. Crumble the tahini topping over the fruit in small chunks so you get a mix of crisp edges and softer pieces.

Bake for 35–45 minutes at 350°F, until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling. Serve warm with an extra drizzle of tahini or a spoonful of additional apple cherry butter if you like. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to one week and reheat before serving. This crumble is great warm and pie-like, but it’s also delicious chilled.

How to Serve Apple Cherry Tahini Crumble

This crumble works beautifully as a summer breakfast, snack, or light dessert. It captures pie-like flavors with minimal prep and is an excellent way to use up a bounty of cherries and apples. The most time-consuming step is pitting cherries, so a cherry pitter can be a useful tool. You can also vary the fruit — use all cherries, all apples, or substitute other seasonal fruit for different versions.
