Almond Butter, Spinach and Banana Smoothie

I layer colorful ingredients into the pitcher, secure the lid, and crank up the blender. The sound of crushing and pureeing draws my kids into the kitchen every time.

“What are you making?” they ask. “A smoothie,” I reply. “Do you want some?” “Yes!” they say. Smoothies are a hit at our house.

As a child I often had a quick banana-and-milk smoothie for breakfast. Today my smoothies are a bit more complex—still fast, but packed with more nutrition. I enjoy experimenting with combinations for breakfasts or afternoon snacks.

This creamy almond butter, spinach, and banana smoothie is one I make most often. It uses ingredients I usually have on hand, blends to a velvety texture, and tastes great.

The Ingredients

This smoothie keeps the classic banana-and-milk base but swaps dairy milk for a dairy-free option and adds nutrient-dense ingredients for extra flavor and health benefits.

Below is a quick overview of each ingredient and why it’s a good choice for this smoothie.

Almond Milk (or milk of choice)

I often use unsweetened almond milk because it’s low in sugar and has a mild flavor that lets the banana and almond butter shine. Use whichever milk you prefer—dairy or plant-based.

Almond Butter

Almond butter adds creaminess, healthy fats, and some protein, along with vitamins and minerals like vitamin E and iron. Choose an almond butter with no added sugar—ideally just almonds and a pinch of salt.

Flax Meal

Ground flax seeds (flax meal) are rich in omega-3 fats, fiber, and antioxidants. Grinding makes the nutrients easier to absorb, so flax meal is a smart addition to smoothies.

Spinach

Spinach adds vitamins, minerals, and fiber without noticeably changing the flavor in a small amount, which makes it ideal for picky eaters.

Banana

Bananas contribute natural sweetness and creamy texture, along with potassium and fiber. If you prefer a colder, frosty smoothie, use frozen banana slices.

How to Make Almond Butter, Spinach and Banana Smoothie

Gather your ingredients. For the smoothest and fastest blend, add ingredients to the blender in this order: almond milk first, then flax meal, banana and spinach, almond butter, and finally the ice.

Blend for about one minute, or until everything is smooth and creamy. Serve immediately.

Useful Smoothie Tips

  • Buy large containers of spinach and portion some into freezer bags so you always have it ready for smoothies.
  • If bananas are ripening too quickly, peel and slice them, then freeze the slices. Frozen bananas blend to a great texture.
  • If you want a cold, frosty drink and don’t have frozen banana, add a few ice cubes.
  • Store flax meal in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator to prevent it from going rancid; it can last up to six months when stored properly.
  • Add a scoop of unflavored protein powder if you want more protein without changing the smoothie’s flavor.
  • Try adding a couple of strawberries, frozen pineapple pieces, or frozen blueberries for variety.
  • I don’t add sweetener because ripe bananas provide plenty of sweetness. If your bananas aren’t ripe, add a little sweetener or a date to taste.

Enjoy!
