Juicy hamburgers, cheeseburgers, or sliders made in the air fryer deliver big flavor with less mess. The air fryer has become my favorite small appliance because it heats quickly, cooks evenly, and makes cleanup simple. When the grill is tucked away during colder months, the air fryer is a fast, reliable way to cook fresh or frozen patties. Follow these tips and you’ll have excellent burgers in no time.

Cooking Hamburgers in the Air Fryer
Air fryer hamburgers are quick and easy, and they’re far less messy than cooking on a grill or stovetop. The unit reaches the right temperature fast, patties are simple to flip, and the basket keeps grease contained for easy cleanup.
This method is perfect for winter nights or anytime you want a straightforward way to cook burgers without firing up the grill.

What Air Fryer Should I Buy?
Most air fryers perform similarly for basic recipes like hamburgers. Any model with a basket and adjustable temperature should work well. If you want extra versatility, look for models with multiple functions (air fry, bake, reheat) and a roomy basket.
I use an Instant brand air fryer with a 6-quart basket; it’s large enough to cook multiple patties at once and offers several cooking modes. There are many good brands and sizes available, so choose one that fits your kitchen and how much you typically cook.

Can You Cook Hamburgers in the Air Fryer?
Yes—you can make great hamburgers in the air fryer. Here’s a simple overview:
- Combine your seasonings with the ground beef and form into four even patties.
- Arrange the patties in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook about 9–12 minutes total, depending on thickness, flipping halfway through.
- If adding cheese, top the patties near the end and cook an additional minute so the cheese melts.

Frozen Hamburger Patties in the Air Fryer
Frozen patties also cook well in the air fryer. If you’re using frozen patties, add about 5–7 minutes to the cook time depending on thickness. Always check doneness with a meat thermometer—the safe internal temperature for ground beef is 160°F.

Burger Toppings and Buns
Topping your burger is a personal choice—choose whatever you enjoy. In these photos I styled the burgers after a Red Rock burger: served in a pita with Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, red onion, lettuce, and fry sauce. That combination is tasty, but feel free to build your burger any way you like.
