Does that word make you cringe, or does it spark a little joy? For me, organizing brings a quiet thrill. I enjoy lists, systems, and the small victories that come with putting things in order.
With the holidays packed away, I’ve shifted into cleaning and organizing mode. I’m always on the lookout for practical organizing tips and products that help tame household clutter—especially kid items, which have a remarkable ability to take over. One simple solution changed the way we store movies, and it’s so effective I’m surprised I haven’t shared it sooner.
The idea came from a neighbor who lent us a zippered DVD case when our child was sick. That case held nearly one hundred discs in a compact, portable package. It felt brilliant—so obvious in hindsight—and I was immediately inspired to do the same at home. Before, our collection of DVDs had outgrown the bins I’d used for years and was spilling across shelves and closets.
After seeing that compact case, I bought a couple of zippered DVD organizers. You’ll find similar cases at many stores that sell electronics or media accessories. - Choose compact storage: Zippered DVD cases or binder-style sleeves drastically reduce the space DVDs occupy. They are portable and keep discs safe from scratches and dust.
- Label for clarity: Use a simple labeling system on the case spine or the outside: “Kids,” “Family,” “Animation,” etc. A quick label avoids rifling through every sleeve when you need something fast.
- Keep favorites accessible: Store frequently watched titles in the front of the case or in a separate small case. Reserve less-used discs for longer-term storage.
- Recycle responsibly: Recycle or donate empty DVD cases and jackets. Some stores and community centers accept media cases for reuse.
After switching to the zippered cases, the change was dramatic. Our movies that once cluttered shelves now fit neatly in a tiny footprint. I bought one case for little-kid films and another for teen and adult titles. The result is neat, compact, and surprisingly satisfying—there’s even extra shelf space for other items.
