This tuna mousse dip is creamy, simple to prepare and incredibly versatile. Serve it as a dip, spread, or turn it into elegant tuna canapés.

If you’re searching for an easy party recipe that always pleases a crowd, this tuna mousse dip is a perfect choice.
I’m a big fan of appetizers, so it won’t surprise you that I have many bite-sized favorites on the blog. Small snacks like mozzarella cheese balls, smoked salmon bites, tuna empanadas and popcorn chicken are all crowd-pleasers and ideal for gatherings. This tuna mousse dip fits right in — creamy, flavorful and quick to assemble.
This mousse has been a family staple for years. My mom used to whip it up often when we were kids, because it’s fast, economical and consistently well received. She even used to pipe it onto crackers and toast to make fancy canapés for parties.

How to make tuna mousse dip
Start by creaming softened unsalted butter with a little hot water in a food processor. Using butter at room temperature makes it much easier to reach a smooth, spreadable texture before you add the other ingredients.
Drain the canned tuna well so the mixture doesn’t become oily or runny. Finely diced onion adds brightness and crunch — about ½ cup works well, but add more if you prefer a stronger onion flavor.
Season with a pinch of salt and freshly ground pepper. If you’re unsure about the seasoning, blend the mixture first, taste, and then adjust the salt and pepper to your preference.

How to make tuna appetizers
The simplest canapé uses toasted bread, a smear of tuna mousse, a thin radish slice and a few chopped chives. If you prefer, use fresh baguette slices instead of toast — they hold up better if you need to make the canapés ahead of time.
Tip: Toasted bread is best served immediately to maintain crispness. If you want to assemble the appetizers well in advance, choose fresh baguette slices to avoid soggy toast.

This recipe makes about 1½ cups of spread. You’ll use roughly ½ cup to make 24 canapés, leaving about a cup of mousse to serve as a dip or to save for sandwiches. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Before serving, let the mousse sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes for the best texture and flavor.
The spread takes about 5 minutes to prepare; allow an extra 10 minutes to assemble 24 canapés.

Why this tuna mousse is great: It’s adaptable — serve it as a party dip, spread it on sandwiches for an easy lunch, or dollop it onto toasts as elegant canapés. The flavor is familiar and comforting, and the texture is smooth and spreadable.
